Welcome to About a Book, my new blog about the 52 books I hope to read in 2019.

Why 52? Because I love a challenge, and after semi-successfully answering the self-inflicted call to read a book each week last year (48 isn't bad), I am at it again.

Last year I worked off the goodreads.com book challenge list from 2017; this year I asked friends for suggestions, and I quickly racked up almost 52 book ideas, and saved a couple slots for books that catch my eye at the library.

This week I started my new reading challenge with Richard Matheson's I Am Legend, recommended by my college buddy Rossana Rossi. More on I Am Legend in my next blog.

In addition to discussing these 52 books, About a Book will be a place for all things related to my own memoir, One Little Bolshevik, the story of my Russian father's adoption by Nazis during World War II. I recently completed a first draft and am chipping away at the chunk that is the initial draft, hoping to sculpt it into something beautiful, readable, and not-put-downable. I'll share my stories of the editing process, including my adventures in my new writing/editing group, and my work to get One Little Bolshevik published.

About A Book will hopefully also evolve, to include things that I haven't even thought of yet. How about I interview the people who recommended the books I read, and share our conversations here? I just thought of that--it sounds fun.

Almost Too Much Covered in The Tradition

In his third book of poetry, The Tradition , Jericho Brown covers much ground: he grapples with myth, media, racism, his own mortality, and still manages to push past established forms of poetry. It’s impressive in scope, but the breadth can leave the reader forgetting the ground covered because there was too much of it. Brown conveys a disdain for the world around him that embraces and encourages racism and violence, but also exudes a confidence about his own abilities to navigate the terrain. This is a book from a grown, tired man, and is filled with the heartbreak and the fortitude he’s earned. He introduces, too, the “Duplex” form in his poetry, described by Jeannine Hall Gailey in her Barrelhouse review of The Tradition as “a sonnet-like series of couplets that include repetition.” The repetition accomplishes a layering of experiences and voices, making his experiences feel that much more echoed in the lives of others, as though he is not alone. A Chat with E. Christopher Clark, author of the Stains of Time series
